< Mt. Katahdin, standing approximately 5, 267 feet high, and among the tallest peaks in the Eastern United States, is located in the southern portion of Baxter State Park in Maine.

A gift of former Maine Governor Percival Baxter, beginning in 1930, Baxter State Park is a wilderness area of more than 202,000 acres which contains 46 mountain peaks and ridges, 18 of which exceed an elevation of 3000 feet. The Park also contains about 175 miles of trails.

Reservations in advance are required for extended stays in the Park while daily access is based on a first-come first-served basis. EARLY arrival at the Park (before 6AM) is recommended.
